Kingman, AZ February 17, 2020

So I got into Kingman last night.  It was late but that was fine, everything I wanted to do in Kingman was closed on Sunday, which is why I planned on getting to Kingman late on Sunday, and I could hit the road with both feet on Monday.

Turns out Monday is a holiday, Presidents Day.  And all government museums, along with the library, are closed.

I did the first museum on my list Mohave Museum of History and Arts, where I got my coupon for the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum...which is closed because of the holiday.  I also get to tour the Bonelli House at a reduced price...but not today, because its a holiday.

The Mohave Museum of History was really well put together.  Its very similar to other small town history museums, but this one was well displayed.  They talked about the indigenous people that lived in the area, the Europeans that moved in and the mining that both built multiple towns in the area and (when the mines closed) ended the towns in the area.  They have a caboose on display.  I've recently learned that the caboose on a train was needed to house the staff that ran the train.  I didn't know that, but I was impressed with the design of the caboose.  It had a toilet, small food prep area, wood burning stove, beds, seats and a little bit of storage area.  They made good use of space.

So I'm stuck in Kingman without a place to be until tomorrow.  I considered moving on, but other things could be closed as its a holiday and I might as well stay put.  I checked the movie theater, it has two screens and one I saw a few days ago - Birds of Prey.  And the other is Sonic the Hedgehog, which I have no interest in paying money to see.  I might hike some this afternoon, but I remember looking at hiking options in this area and most of them include the word 'mountain' in the name of the trail or are listed as advanced, and I know my knees won't be able to handle too much of that.  So I'm at Chili's.  They have wifi, a place to plug in my computer and $5 margaritas.  I got here around noon and I have a very large day to blow.  But I have computer things I can do.

Gina is coming in 10 days and we have an itinerary but I need to complete the lodging reservations before anything affordable will be booked before long.  I was able to finish everything I wanted to do early.  I have 2 days at an Airbnb in San Jose.  We can do both the Winchester House and the Big Basin Redwoods State Park while staying here.  We can catch Pinnacle National Park on the way back south to Anaheim.

I have two rooms booked within walking distance of Disneyland.  This is the most expensive lodging, but we'll save $25 a day on parking fees.  I've stayed here before and its a good distance, we can walk over to the Mickey & Friends Parking Garage and take the shuttle to the park.  If they still allow people to walk through employee parking, which could be an issue.  If not, we are stills really close, we'd just have to walk a little farther.

I'm going to use this time to do some research on the books that I'm putting together, and solidifying my schedule.  I'm staying with family in Lancaster for a couple of days at the end of this week.  I don't know how long they want to keep me but I suggested two days, as that would be time to rest and visit.  I feel bad for contacting her now, as she has a cousin staying there during the same time frame, but she originally reached out, so I was just following up.  It feels weird, I'm not sure if I'm really welcome or not.  If I stay 2 days, it will give me 4 days until Gina gets here and I can take care of some maintenance things or check out places before she gets here.  I could just spend days at the library doing some research if needed.  I looked into Passport Travel Clinics and they have a few in the Los Angeles area, I could get my yellow fever vaccines if I have time.
