Interesting things we did this week

  • After my excellent 20 mile walk on Saturday, my Sunday was a little less successful.  I was a awake and full of pep at 5am, but I messed up my feet pretty badly on Saturday.  I’m going to lose a toenail on my right foot and I have a callous/blister combination on the bottom of my right toe which is going to be problematic.  I pushed myself to do 5 miles, I would have liked to do a full 10k, but I was close enough.  The toes are an issue and I probably shouldn’t have gone at all.  I doctored the feet up and taped the toenail down so hopefully it’ll stay put until the new nail starts to emerge.  The blister got a little New Skin and hopefully will merge with the callous portion of the toe.  The weather this week dropped, so I’m taking the opportunity to rest for a few days and let the toes heal.
  • Gil and I were supposed to go with Gina and Phil to Universal Studios on the 5th of December, but that got moved to Dec 12th.  I had tentatively planned to do the marathon on the 12th with a backup date for the 19th in case of weather issues.  But now the marathon is being done on the 19th with the only possible backup date being on the 20th.  If it rains that weekend, its going to suck.  The only good part is that my feet will have a little extra time to heal before I do another big mileage day.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday went well over the weekend.  I don’t have an extensive xmas list, but I was able to order stuff for Gil, order a few things I needed for my Asia trip.  Got my calendars out of the way and ordered.  Got my voucher for my 2020 Yearbook, which I won’t order until the end of the year.  I want to get Xmas photos with my Grandma and I want to include the Honolulu Marathon Medals after I earn them.  I should be able to get the final product ordered by the first week of January.
  • I haven’t really lost weight since the beginning of November, I’m back to donating plasma again, so I’m eating with that in mind.  I’m also trying to make sure I have enough fuel for the longer distances.  I think after I complete the 26.2 I can rethink my diet, but getting enough protein is hard and protein contains calories.
  • The US has been breaking lots of our own records.  On Wednesday, we broke our own record again for the most reported Covid19 deaths in a day 2658.
  • Its been stinking cold this week.  I tried to walk this morning and got to work early enough to do it.  Just didn’t want to get out of the warm toasty car.  I’m going to walk this evening.  Even just a couple of hours to get me some miles and see how the toes are doing.  They are starting to toughen up a bit and are no longer that raw hurt they were over the weekend.
  •  Saturday was the first day I tried to do real miles on my messed up feet.  I did 10 miles at Boyd Hill and the first miles were a bit uncomfortable, the blister/callous on my little toe being more problematic than the toe with the toenail I’m going to lose.  When I got home, I ‘doctored’ that little toe again and that was a mistake, I should have just left it be.  Gil and I did 5k in the evening, downtown around the pier and the first mile or so was pretty painful, but I had used New Skin and took some pain killers and it worked just fine after.  Gil got to see the new pier for the first time and we had a good walk.  I kept a pretty steady pace and Gil struggled a little but he kept up.  We also took a little ride on a AVA – an autonomous vehicle that is being tested downtown.  It was interesting.
  • I’ve started using the Kindle Unlimited in the last few weeks.  Poking around and reading a few books.  So far I’ve read:
    • Africa Bites by Loyd Camp – similar to the Whatever You Do Don’t Run book and I think these two safari guides worked together, they worked for the same company and mention the same camps.  I don’t know if they worked at the same camps at the same time.  It was good, lots of interesting stories, lots of sad or scary stories too.
    • How to Live in a Small Car by Chris Delta – This was a very small guide and much of what he talks about I used, but I do wish I’d read this book before I did my stint in my car as I think he did it better.  I’ll probably consult the guide again if I do another long term road trip.
    • My Name is Nutmeg by Jacqueline Kelley – not as warm as the British authors that write similar stories, but this was coming from a different perspective too.  I liked the behind the scenes look at a private agency, one with better funding, and how they help the children.  The child the book is about, is no longer a child and unlike many of the other books I’ve read, her own perception was added to the end of the book.  She’s now a grown adult and a lawyer that helps children.
