Interesting things that happened this week

- Gil and I went to the zoo on Sunday for our Koala photograph.  We were supposed to meet Phil and Gina at the zoo after but they canceled that morning.  We got to the zoo and waited around for the koalas to wake up and be cooperative.  They are encouraged to participate with treats, but they aren’t forced.  We talked to the zoo employees running the interaction and I bombarded them with a million questions.  We also talked about hurricane preparation at the zoo, which I found fascinating.  I suggested they should have a hurricane tour, where they talk about how they prepare the animals and facilities for a hurricane.  Turns out they leave the elephants and manatees out to do their business as usually, as long as it’s a smaller hurricane.  Venomous snakes get put into bags, that way if a building is compromised, the entire neighborhood isn’t invaded by dangerous reptiles.  I’d love to take that kind of a tour.  Maybe see how some of the buildings are reinforced and such.

- After Gina & Phil canceled and the koalas didn’t want to come out to play, we decided to head over to Disney for a little fun.  We started out at Disney Springs, but we got bored of that quick enough.  There were too many people and we hit some favorite stores.  We caught the bus to Wilderness Lodge, where we had some lunch and then took the boat to Magic Kingdome, jumped on the monorail and did a loop of the lake.  It felt like coming home.  We eventually made our way over to the Art of Animation and wandered the property for bit before jumping on the new SkyLine.  We were able to jump on a couple and see a little Disney from the sky.  The SkyLine pods are nice, good ventilation, big enough to hold a normal family, and the windows are shaded so you don’t get baked in the sun during the summer.  Gil didn’t have any problems entering or exiting, so they work well for people with disabilities and there wasn’t any bumping as we ran into other pods.  It was very nice.

- I took a bunch of photos at the zoo with the good camera and a bunch of videos with the good camera.  I took video with my phone at Disney.  I want to see if I can work with these videos as easily as I can with the GoPro vids.  They may be different formats.  On Monday I went to the library and got most of my recent work saved to the external drive, but I’m having a hard time getting the videos off my phone.  I originally didn’t have the sync set up on the new phone, so it may have just been a timing thing, but we’ll see.  My GoPro Quik program won’t work anymore.  I expect I deleted something I thought belonged to one of the other editing programs but it probably belongs to Quik.  I’m going to try to delete and redo that software on the computer.  I’m also going to try to load it on my phone maybe, see if I can edit phone video with the phone editor app.  I’m not sure it will work, I haven’t tried any non-GoPro video with Quik, so it might not work.  UPDATE:  non-GoPro video doesn’t work with Quik.

- Daylight savings time kicked in this week.  So now sunrise is around 6:30am and sunset is around 5:30pm.  I’ve decided to stay on my previous schedule and not convert to the new time.  I was getting up at 6am for work before, now I’m getting up at 5am and doing laps at work before I have to be in the office.  Its been cold this week, so starting my walk between 5:30-6:00am isn’t that pleasant.  I need to dig out my winter gear.  The cold front only lasted for a couple of days then started getting warmer again, but these cold fronts will start coming more regularly and I need to be prepared.  I do like kicking out a 5k before work.  After work, I can still get a few miles in before it gets dark, but I an also do the library and get work done there.  Or go home and get stuff done there.

- I’m down to 179 pounds.  But only first thing in the morning after a good toilet experience.
