March 22, 2020 - Dallas, TX
Coronavirus cases in the US today are 32,722. So its up 6x in 6 days. I messaged Laura and school has been closed in the Dallas area. I think at this stage it was closed all over the country, but I'm not sure when it kicked in nation wide. All sporting events and large venue concerts were closed. Theme parks were closed. Everything non-essential is closed. I had planned on doing things on this leg of the trip, but I'm not going to be able to do any of them. The state parks in Florida closed. New Orleans was being talked about as an epicenter due to spring break and the entire French Quarter is closed.
Her kids have the regular flu and her house is in chaos.
Laura and I meet at a local park by a lake. Its pretty close to where she lives. When I get there, its like a ghost town. There is a single car with a boat trailer in the parking lot, but the boat and owner are somewhere out on the water. There are some birds that have crossed my path but due to 2 days of rain, the picnic area is damp. I dig out a towel from my car and pick out a table that is has less water/bird poop on it. Its under a pavilion, so it isn't completely covered, but its wet/dirty enough to need some change before we can eat lunch.
I hit the bathroom and scrub the crap out of my hands before Laura gets there. We've already set the rules, no hugs, no touching etc. We are supposed to be 6 feet apart for social distancing, but that isn't practical. We stay on the opposite sides of the picnic table and we have a great visit. I think we are there for three hours or something. I chase a couple of birds with my camera. Got a great photo of a Scissor Tailed Flycatcher. We say goodbye and I'm on my way.
I have no where else to go, I point my car east and this is basically the end of my trip. I'm debating doing a drive through New Orleans French Quarter in order to get some photos of the architecture without a bunch of heads in the way. I'm also looking forward to entering an area with Captain D's and Zaxby's fast food restaurants. They had some Captain D's in Dallas, but I knew I was meeting Laura for lunch. There is more along my route.
I cross over into Louisiana and immediately start looking for places to crash. Its way too early, but my eyes hurt and I know I'm not going to be going too far. I kept going for awhile and found a nice place a couple hours outside of New Orleans. Right off the expressway and it appears safe enough.
