Holbrook, AZ Jan 10-12
Left work Friday and jumped on the I-40 east. It was supposed to be cold and I got the hell
out of Dodge for the bulk of it. Friday
night I arrived in Winslow around 6:30pm, found a nice parking spot at the
Winslow Theater and caught a 7pm showing of Spies in Disguise. It was cute.
The theater is historic and has been well maintained. The seats were relatively new and the concessions
were relatively inexpensive. Headed over
to the truck stop and found a nice parking spot close to the train tracks. I remember the train being closer, but I could
still here it through the night, the nice soothing rhythmic sounds.
Saturday morning I headed to Holbrook. I had a reservation at the Wigwam Motel but
check in wasn’t until 4pm. I found the
library and did lots of work until around 2:00pm. Went to the Corral, a Route 66 historical bar
and grill and enjoyed an Angry Orchard with some chicken wings. Finally headed over to Wigwam and checked
into my room. In the back room of the lobby, there is a
little museum and I did a walkthrough.
Wood burning stoves kept the lobby warm and it was a real nice set up.

The wigwam room is much larger than I expected and its in
need of a little updating, but not sure how much updating could be done and
still maintain the structure. It needs
more electric outlets; it needs a new tv etc.
But I made do and spend Saturday night gutting my car so I could take my
sheets and blankets to the laundromat. I
hadn’t done major washing since mid-November, so it was time. I was able to find a few things I’d misplaced
in the car, which was nice. Slept ok,
but not as well as I do in my car. The
next morning, I put everything back into the car (it took about an hour) and jumped
in the shower. I felt obligated to take
advantage of all the amenities of my overpriced Wigwam. Headed back to Flagstaff early. I thought maybe I would explore more of Holbrook,
but I didn’t. Thought maybe I’d explore
a little more of Winslow, but I didn’t. Got
to Flagstaff and thought I’d do some hiking…but there was still snow and melt
and ick on the trails and my ears were old, so that lasted about 15
minutes.
Ended up going to the Texas Steakhouse and ate well. Had enough leftovers to provide lunch on Monday
and dinner Monday night. It costs some,
but its often worth it.
