Route 66 Day 22 Oct 30, 2019
Up bright and early, I knew that parking in the historic district was an issue, so the earlier I got there, the better. It was super cold, so i piled on some layers and looked like a bag lady, but I survived.
Wondered about and took photos and checked out some interesting shops and got a hot thai tea latte to keep me warm. I’d prepaid for 2 hours of parking but I didn’t make it that long before I hea
ded back to the
car. There was a lot more I could have seen, there are tons of museums and such. I didn’t really have a map, so I was wandering randomly. As I drove off, I found a whole other section that I missed. I could have
stuck around, but it was cold and I can really only look at unaffordable art for so long. It was still before noon, so off to the National Monument before heading south. Or so I thought. The woman at the visitors center
talked me into checking out Bandelier National Monument. Guess, I’m doing one more night in Santa Fe. Kasha-Katuwe Tent National Monument was fairly small but beautiful. There is a small trail past the main section,
you have to go out of federal land and onto private land for part of the drive. And they close the gate at 1:30pm. Needless to say, I did the drive up there but I didn’t have time for the hike. It was really beautiful
and if I go back, I’ll be sure to go early enough to check out this secondary site. Back to the main trails. There are two trails here and part of the second trail is fairly advanced, so I only did part of the trail.
I was also wearing a full length skirt (bad choice) and there was some climbing over rocks and tight spaces that would have been easier in pants but very difficult in a floor length skirt. Regardless, the volcanic formations
of this area are unique and I took lots of photos. Also chased a couple of birds and eventually got some mediocre photos. Birds on this trip are extremely unhelpful and aren’t fans of posing for photos. The flora
and scenic photos were easily enough to make this park worth the effort.

Back to Santa Fe and originally I wanted to be in Albuquerque already as a cold front was coming in. Albuquerque was going to be 10 degrees warmer than Santa Fe. But I batted down the hatches, put on extra
socks and got ready in the Walmart parking lot for a rough night.
