Route 66 - Day 2 Oct 10
The second day on the Route went a little smoother. Picked up where I left off in Joliet and checked off many of the things on the list. Saw a lot of iconic places/exhibits today and managed to make it all the way to Lincoln, IL.
Highlights included:
Dwight, IL where I visited an old service station that is now also being used as a visitors center. Two gentleman there were very fun and helpful with information. I put a pin in the map to show where I had come from and there were thousands of other pins in the map. Its fun to see all the people doing the Route. Then I put a plastic fireman hat on my head and sat in the old firetruck. The bell still works and I had a great time making quite the racket. The guys said that the under 11 crowd love wearing the fireman hat. The under 80 crowd likes ringing the bell. I totally believe it.
Also in Dwight, IL...I did a small hike around the Dwight Lions Lake.
In Pontiac, IL I walked through the Route 66 Museum and Visitors Center. After I did a small walk in the rain to see the Pontiac Swinging bridges.
In Lexington, I drove the old Memory Lane which is adorable and worth the 5 minutes it takes to do it.
Explored the community of Funks Grove, IL which is currently considered a ghost town. However there is still a small church and cemetery in the area that appear active. I saw deer in the church yard, but they wouldn't wait for me to get my camera. There is a nature center which appears to be geared towards children but is really well done. They have bee hives and nature paths and a barnyard. There is also a Funks Grove Maple farm that had a big sign stating they were sold out. There is also some farms near by. A small...but not quite dead...community.
Mclean Depot is the one of two standing (although inactive) train stations that saw the 1865 funeral train of President Abraham Lincoln.
Dixie Truck stop (also in McLean) opened in 1928, the oldest truck stop in Illinois.
Highlights included:
I explored the old two celled jail in Gardner, IL.
I went to the Lincoln National Cemetery and the Poor Farm Cemetery.
