Route 66 Day 15 Oct 23, 2019

Woke up around 6am this morning and enjoyed some laying about watching Netflix for awhile.  Eventually, I got up and picked up my list where I left off.  Took photos of diners and motels and street art.  Made a little detour to check out the Center of the Universe and stood in the center and listened to my echo.  Up until this point, I was loving Tulsa...it definitely embraces the Route 66 culture.  Driving in downtown Tulsa sucks though and up until this point I didn't really get the big city feel from Tulsa, but it is.  Enjoyed the art exhibit though and headed back to the 66.  Kept knocking things off the list and had a late lunch at Her Meltdown Diner.  Got a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich and a great conversation with the owner. She showed me photos of the renovation of the building and talked about the process to turn it into a diner.  It was built in 1949 as a service station and was a number of other business after the service station closed.  She turned it into a diner.  It was very cool.

Took a little detour off into an older section of Route 66 that is also part of the Ozark Trail.  It isn't well maintained, but there is a bridge that has recently been fixed up and an old drive in that is actually in pretty good shape and could probably be easily put back into use with a giant lawn mower and proper projector equipment.  The screen is untorn and in good shape.

Worked my way through Shroud Ok where I crossed off lots of interesting POI and then into Chandler.  It was starting to get late and I was starting to worry about where I was going to stay.  The last few Walmarts weren't 24 hours and there weren't any rest areas close by.  I was starting to consider other option but decided to check with the Chandler Walmart to check on their policy on overnight parking.  Turns out they had just recently went from 24 hours to closing at night and they still allowed overnight parking!  I could have moved on to more town, but there was a museum I really wanted to check out and it had closed at 5pm.  So, I bought some supplies (always a curtesy) and moved into a proper parking spot (they requested I park on the east side)
