Auburn, Cord & Duesenberg Museum - Auburn, IN
Headed out on Tuesday Oct 8 for my Route 66 roadtrip. My plan was to take a little detour to Auburn, IN and spend some time at the Auburn, Cord & Duesenberg museum. I ended up getting a late start and there was only 20 minutes left when I get there on Tuesday, so I decided to hold of and make an early start on Wednesday morning. In truth, I don't know that much about cars and I just love Duesenbergs. The man that owns the Casa Monica in St. Augustine will often have a number of antique cars on the property and one day I saw a beautiful black Duesenberg Model J and I was in love. I found out about a Duesenberg Museum a few years ago and while doing my Route 66 research, I checked to see if it was close. Close enough. I planned a 1 hour detour to go see the pretty cars. Turns out the history of cars in Auburn is really interesting and the Auburns and Cords were also beautiful. A local car club allows their cars to be displayed in the museum as well, and on the third floor is a beautiful diverse display of old cars. Before Henry Ford made Detroit the Motor Capital...Auburn Indiana was producing a lot of vehicles. Unfortunately, between the depression and Henry Ford offering cars at a huge discount, the high end cars of Auburn didn't survive. Its too bad, I'm sure they'd be producing beautiful works of art today if they had.
Ended spending over 3 hours here before finally jumping back in my car and heading toward Chicago and the beginning of Route 66.
